Hey Baby!
Since one of the main purposes of this blog is to give you some insight into what was going on at home and in the world when you were getting ready to be born, I thought I would include a little bit of news. Today was a pretty significant week in history. On Thursday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average posted its first finish ever above 16,000 (closing at 16,009). That’s a pretty big milestone. Today, the nation is remembering President John F. Kennedy on the 50th anniversary of his assassination. I was still a long ways from being born myself when this happened, but JFK was the kind of figure that casts a long shadow. He was a big deal, baby. And everyone in my parent’s generation has a story about where they were or how they found out about the death of the President. So I asked my own mother to send me her recollection of that day, so I could preserve it here for you to read someday. I also included a picture of the front page of the Boston Globe the day after the assassination, as well as the front page of the Dallas Morning News today, 50 years later.
Love,
Your Mommy
The Boston Globe (November 23rd, 1963):
The Dallas Morning News (November 22nd, 2013):
From your Ooma:
“I was picked up at school sick by my Dad the day JFK died. I was 14 years old. My father had the radio on in the car and he told me that the President had been shot in Dallas and had died. It was the first time I saw my father cry. We went home and that night it was very quiet in our house with my mother and father watching the news on television. I remember watching his funeral on television and crying when I saw his wife and children. I also remember his wife in her blood stained suit when Lyndon Johnson was sworn in later that day as President. It was my first experience with violence.”
